It is time for the high school football season, which means it is time for those hard tackles, fantastic catches and amazing runs to the end zone.

It is also time for the loud and funny chants, the painted faces, the themed T-shirts, the rowdy mascots and of course the baby powder.

The Student Section season is underway and it has become a beast of its own the last few years. Students and fans show up not only for the school spirit and to cheer their friends and family on, but also to show everyone who has the best fans in Orange County.

Week Zero began much earlier than previous seasons, which means some Orange County high school are not in session yet. so It made it hard for some student sections to rally together for the season openers on Thursday and Friday, but we found a few rowdy kids that showed up in the middle of August already in midseason form.

The Lions Den of JSerra showed up in big numbers and got a good showing from their football team in a 49-7 victory over Corona del Mar. You know that got the Den rattling.

The Clan of La Habra showed up to their brand new stadium in their old fashion – loud and colorful. The Clan started where they left off despite the tough 24-12 loss to Upland.

The San Juan Hills Stampede showed up in sea of white. It was a loud white in a 27-7 loss to Orange Lutheran. The game was closer than the score appeared. It’s going to go up from here for the team and that student section.

But the student section that stood out the most was The Cage of Capistrano Valley. The Cage showed up in yellow, but it was difficult to tell given the white baby powder and white smoke covering them for much of the game. It was the same white smoke you might see the University of Miami team run through in their pregame entrance. The Cage had the same swagger as ‘The U’ and they seemed to rattle Tustin on Friday in a 42-7 victory for Capo Valley.

“The Cage is a place where the students of Capo can unleash their inner Cougar and let their spirit run free” said Capo Valley ASB president Andy Ceja.

The Cage wanted this and reminded myself and the OCVarsity staff how much they wanted this by using the #ocvstudentsection on their social media post. The spirited section never quieted down, which is normally the case in a one-sided affair, but the cheerleaders and band made sure the noise stayed the course throughout the whole game. This was a team effort.

As previously mentioned, The Cage showed up before school was in session, which impressed teachers and even their principal.

“The first day of school is still four days away,” Capistrano Valley principal John Misustin said. “Yet the student section is full and loud for all four quarters. There is not a better, more spirited student body anywhere in Orange County.”

Principal Misustin could be right – which is why the 2018 Student Section season starts with The Cage of Capo Valley taking the title of OCVarsity Student Section of the Week for Week 0.

Don’t rattle ‘The Cage!’
