LA VERNE — Capistrano Valley turned a close game at halftime into a rout with 21 points in the first three minutes of the third quarter and went on to defeat Damien, 34-7, in Friday’s CIF-SS Division 4 football quarterfinals.

Capistrano Valley (12-0), the top seed in Division 4, advances to the semifinals for the second straight year after reaching the Division 5 title game a year ago. The Cougars will be home against Downey on Friday, Nov. 24.

Damien (7-5), hoping to reach its first semifinal since 1995, was hampered by a penalty-filled first half and an awful start to the third quarter.

On the second play of the third quarter, Capistrano Valley quarterback Nathan Manning delivered a strike in stride to Matt Blethen for a 75-yard touchdown pass and 17-0 lead. After the Cougars’ Brady Kasper intercepted a pass and returned it to the Damien 11-yard line, Kian Assarpour scored a few plays later, running for a 1-yard TD to put the Cougars up 24-0.

The Spartans’ self destruction continued with Damien quarterback Warren Bryan losing a fumble, which led to Manning’s 20-yard run and 31-0 lead for Capistrano Valley, and that was that.

Manning threw for 213 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for a touchdown to lead the Eagles.

“We had a slow first half, but second half we knew we had to come out and execute and the defense gave up great field position with the turnovers,” Manning said.

Bryan, who threw for 399 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s first-round win, was sacked seven times and held to 104 yards passing, with two fumbles and an interception. He threw a late 45-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Thornton to avoid the shutout.

“It’s all us,” Damien coach Mark Paredes said. “I guess we’re undisciplined. We’ve had a lot of penalties the last three games but that was ridiculous. Our momentum was taken away and we did it to ourselves.

“We also had a lot of dropped passes and you give a good team a lot of chances like that, this is what you get. This is our fault. They’re a great football team, but a lot of this is on us.”

The Spartans had their opportunities in the first half, but kept making mistakes.

Capistrano Valley’s Jake Werner opened the scoring, finishing a 16-play, 96-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0.

Then it was penalties and more penalties for Damien.

Bryan’s 50-yard pass midway through the second quarter inside the Cougars’ 10 was called back for holding.

And it continued.

The Spartans’ Jermaine Barner returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown, but a penalty with one defender to go negated it.

On the same drive, Bryan, on third-and-20, ran 25 yards for a first down to the Cougars’ 30, but a holding penalty negated that play. That led to Capistrano Valley getting the ball back, and with two seconds left before halftime, Ben Selecky booted a 42-yard field goal to give the Cougars a 10-0 lead.
